Book Fair 2022
In response to Call to Action Numbers, 59 and 72 of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission Report, the National Centre for Truth & Reconciliation revealed the names of known children who died in Canada’s Residential Schools. After receiving a list of the names from the National Student Memorial Centre in October of 2019, Kanata United Church began a path to acknowledge the mistakes and missteps of decisions and ideals that caused harm to Indigenous peoples and Indigenous culture. In our commitment to the recommendations of the 2015 Truth & Reconciliation Report and during our time of communal worship, we remembered the 2810 children who died in Canada’s Residential Schools as named in October 2019.
Beginning in March of 2020, and over the course of 103 weeks, the names of the children were read aloud. A candle was lit to give thanks for their lives, and a moment of silence was offered in recognition of the harmful actions perpetrated against them. This included a renewed commitment to hearing the Truth of Indigenous persons and communities and to entering into right relationship and reconciliation.
Please join with us on Saturday, September 24
as we lift up the names of the children, in ceremony and with respect.
